Community options for preventing crime

Crime isn’t just a problem for cops to worry about. Crime affects all people and businesses within a community so it should be the responsibility of everyone in the community to help keep it under control. When your community takes action to eliminate opportunities for crime to develop it sends a powerful non-tolerance message to those with harmful intents. Below are some actions you and other people in your community can take that will collectively lessen crime in your neighborhoods.

Work with your public agencies to develop a neighborhood watch program and ensure your streets and businesses are well-lit.

Don’t make it easy for your youth to become criminal recruits. Ensure there are recreational and/or after-school programs, tutoring centers, volunteer opportunities or even part-time work/internship options available.

Attend community meetings to learn about current problems and help develop ways to encourage everyone to report criminal activity and solve issues when they arise.

Push public agencies to keep parks and public areas clean and well-maintained or organize volunteer clean-up projects for all to partake in. People will use clean and attractive parks and large numbers discourage illegal activity.

Ask your public offices to develop advertisement to promote anti-violence in your community.
